How Colombia's New Christ Statue Compares to Rio's Christ the Redeemer
Comparisons with Rio are unavoidable, and mostly they are about arithmetic. Christ the Redeemer stands 30 meters tall on a 8-meter pedestal. The Cristo del Embalse is designed at 86 meters — near enough to three times the figure height of its Brazilian counterpart.
Scale is not the only difference

- Rio sits above a city; El Peñol sits above water and islands
The engineering approach differs as much as the height. The El Peñol figure is being built in sections — the head is already complete and on public display inside the Hangar — then assembled on the ridge. That sequencing lets the project open attractions years before the sculpture is finished.
Visitors can stand beneath the finished head today, six meters from the face of a statue that will not be complete for years.
